360networks was founded in 1987 as the telecom construction division of Ledcor Industries. In 1998, 360networks became a service provider, with the aim of building a global optical network. The company went public in 2000—just in time to get hit by the dot-com boom and become one of the first telecom companies to file for bankruptcy in 2001.

Still, being first to go bankrupt did come with a benefit—the company went through the restructuring process quickly enough to be able to acquire some other telecom companies' assets when they began filing for bankruptcy. Most significantly, the company acquired Canada's Group Telecom in 2003, then sold it for a profit 18 months later—which brought 360networks out of debt. The company is now privately owned and debt-free.

Also in 2003, the company acquired Dynegy's US network and Touch America's private line and Internet businesses—and in 2004, 360networks purchased assets from Corban Communications.

360networks is now focused on the western half of the United States with a 17,200-mile fiber network that reaches more than 40 major markets, ranging from Tier 1 to Tier 4.

Backbone routers are located in Laurel, MT; Denver, CO; Salt Lake City, UT; Los Angeles, CA; and Portland, OR.

Available products and services include Dedicated Internet Access (DIA) at speeds of T1, DS3, OC3, OC12 and GigE port level; wavelength services; optical point-to-point service and colocation—as well as the company's wholesale VoIP solution, VoIP360.
