Canada's largest independent, facilities-based Competitive Local Exchange Carrier serves most of Canada, and has built gateways to the United States.

Group Telecom is Canada's largest independent, facilities-based Competitive Local Exchange Carrier offering high speed data, Internet applications, and voice services over its own national fibre-optic network. The company's network spans 409,953 strand kilometers (about 254,733 miles).

Group Telecom was founded in 1996 in Vancouver, starting out with fewer than 40 employees. In 1999, things changed. After announcing strategic partnerships with Cisco and Lucent in May, the company entered the national telecommunications market on October 13, 1999, and expanded rapidly, acquiring ShawFibreLink in February of 2000, and launching a NASDAQ IPO on March 9, 2000. Later that year, Group Telecom announced two more acquisitions (Video FibreLink and Cable Atlantic) that made it Canada's second largest CLEC within a year of its IPO. Group Telecom acquired C1 Communications in 2001.

In November, 2001, the company opened a new NOC just outside of Toronto in Mississauga, Ontario. The NOC came with the purchase of C1 Communications in April, 2001, and was upgraded to meet GT standards.

The company plans a thorough restructuring during the year 2002.

As of December 31, 2001, GT Telecom claimed 14,500 business customers. Initially focused on selling to small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), Group Telecom is working on larger business and carrier accounts as its network grows.
